About FDF
The Forum for Democratic Futures (FDF) is a research and advocacy organisation working on environmental democracy, climate governance, and the political rights of Small Island Developing States. We believe that the climate crisis is also a governance crisis, and that meaningful solutions require confronting postcolonial power structures, democratic deficits, and the marginalisation of island voices in global decision-making.
Meet the Founder
Ruwaidah M is the founder and director of FDF. A dual British-Mauritian, her work is shaped by a personal connection to the issues at the heart of FDF's research, postcolonial sovereignty, climate vulnerability, and the political marginalisation of island communities.
She holds an MA in Government (spealising in Democracy and Governance) from Georgetown University and an MA from SOAS, alongside professional experience at the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the National Democratic Institute (NDI), and RedR UK. She founded FDF to bring rigorous research and honest advocacy to issues too often overlooked by larger institutions.
Our focus
Our current research centres on Small Island Developing States, with particular attention to:
Environmental democracy and climate governance frameworks
Postcolonial sovereignty and its ongoing effects on island nations
Democratic accountability and parliamentary scrutiny in climate-related policy
The political rights of communities most exposed to climate impacts
This work is grounded in case studies from the Indian Ocean region, including Mauritius and the Chagos Islands.
looking Ahead
While our current work is focused on SIDS and environmental democracy, FDF's mission sits within a broader commitment to democratic governance and global affairs, areas we intend to expand into as the organisation grows.
